The Side Show (2020)
As a creative for the Side Show awards, I got to pull out all the stops and really have fun with the images I created for their social media presence. From hand lettering to photography I had tons of fun with this project and I hope to continue doing similar work in the future!
Physical Creations
I had a blast creating this fake newspaper for the final submission deadline. I was inspired by the circus aesthetic and old school signage, and I used Annie Atkins’ book ‘Designing Graphic Props for Filmmaking‘ as a reference throughout the process. I designed the layout by looking at newspapers from the 1940’s and printed it on newsprint to give it a move realistic and textural look. While printing, it actually got jammed towards the end which created a misprint effect that I was super happy with! It totally adds a sense of realism and grittiness. I photographed it in my bedroom and did post-processing in Photoshop.
Other graphics that I made also employed the use of physical creations, and I enjoyed bringing the images to life with text and photography. I also employed the use of a Cricut machine to cut out other objects such as tickets.
Hand
Lettering
Not only was I able to hand letter social media graphics, I also hand lettered the covers for all the creativity week panels as seen below. I loved being able to incorporate hand lettering as its a hobby of mine and this was a great opportunity to practice and show off my skills.

Motion Graphics
Motion graphics is another hobby of mine so I helped add some motion to the Side Show graphics by doing some fun things in After Effects.
Illustrations
The Side Show specifically asked for continuous line illustrations and gave me the liberty to come up with a variety of illustrations for their website and banners.
